OpenAI has announced a series of initiatives aimed at helping individuals and businesses harness the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to create new economic opportunities.

The centerpiece of OpenAI’s new efforts is the OpenAI Jobs Platform, designed to connect AI-skilled workers with employers seeking talent. The platform will cater to businesses of all sizes, including local enterprises and government agencies, ensuring that even smaller organisations can compete in the evolving job market.

“If you’re a business looking to hire an AI-savvy employee, or you just need help with a specific task, finding the right person can be hit-or-miss,” said Fidji Simo, CEO of Applications at OpenAI. “The OpenAI Jobs Platform will have knowledgeable, experienced candidates at every level, and opportunities for anyone looking to put their skills to use.”

To ensure that workers are genuinely proficient in AI, OpenAI is also introducing OpenAI Certifications. These certifications will validate AI fluency at various levels, from basic workplace applications to advanced prompt engineering.

The program builds on the success of the OpenAI Academy, a free online learning platform that has already helped over 2 million people develop AI skills. OpenAI plans to certify 10 million Americans by 2030, with Walmart—one of the world’s largest private employers—among its launch partners.

"Mixed Record"

OpenAI acknowledges that AI will disrupt traditional job roles and business models. However, the company says it is focused on mitigating these challenges by equipping workers with the skills needed to thrive in an AI-driven economy.

The new initiatives are designed to align training programs with the actual needs of employers, ensuring that workers gain relevant, in-demand skills.

“We realise that upskilling or reskilling programs have a mixed record, and haven’t always led to better jobs or higher wages,” Simo said. “But we’ve studied what has and hasn’t worked in the past, and are designing our programs to better serve the needs of both workers and companies.”

Collaboration with Industry Leaders

OpenAI is collaborating with a diverse group of organizations, including major employers like Walmart and John Deere, professional services firms such as Boston Consulting Group and Accenture, and job search platforms like Indeed. The company is also working with community organizations and state governments to ensure broad access to AI opportunities.

The initiatives align with OpenAI’s commitment to the White House’s efforts to expand AI literacy. By focusing on both access and practical application, OpenAI aims to democratize AI and empower individuals to shape their own economic futures.

Simo concluded: “If we want to put more power into the hands of more people, not just a fortunate few, we need to help everyone, at every level, take advantage of the opportunities that come with AI.”
